Getting the Most from Special Services for Your Child

If you have a special needs child, you already know that there are many challenges for you, your child and the entire family. No matter what types of challenges your family faces, it’s important to know that you’re not in this alone. Not only are there experts to help, there are also many families who have been through the same thing as you and they can help provide you with tips, advice and moral support.

If your child was diagnosed in special need in some way, you were probably told about special services that exist to help you. There are many different special services available for your child so it can be difficult for parents to know what options to pursue when it comes to helping their child.

Know What is Available

If you really want to get the best of your special services for your child, it’s important that you find out what is available to you. There are now more special services available than ever before so you have many options in seeking help, no matter what type of challenge you face.

Take some time to research all of the options. Talk with your doctor, physician and/or therapist and ask for their suggestions. Talk with other parents and support groups for their suggestions. Research online and locally what options are available for your child’s condition.

Some ways to find out what is available are:

  • • Talk with your doctor
  • • Talk with an expert in the special service area
  • • Talk with local government programs and services
  • • Look up state and national foundations related to your issue
  • • Look up online groups and forums related to your issue
  • • Talk with other parents of children with similar problems

These are just a few of many ways you can research to find out what kinds of tools are available to you and your child.

EI/ECSE

The Early Intervention/Early Childhood Special Education (EI/ECSE) leadership program is a way to help children who are at risk or disabled and their parents. Students in these programs are trained in these special services and how to help families.

Dealing with Medical Emergencies

Students in these programs are trained to become:

1. Experts in program development, implementation and evaluation

2. Experts in policy development and analysis

3. Effective instructors

4. Effective applied researchers

When your child/family is involved with an EI/ECSE program leader, you can feel confident that you are working with someone who is expert in the field and qualified to help you.

EI/ECSE professionals must go through an extensive learning program before they are qualified and certified to help your family. You can feel confident and secure that if your child is in this program, you are getting excellent treatment and assistance in the area of special needs that your child requires.

Parent Communication

It’s also very important that in getting the most from special services for your child you stay in communication with teachers, doctors, therapists and other caregivers. There are different reasons why this communication is important:

• It helps you know what’s going on

• It allows all caregivers to work as a team

• It promotes consistency in the child

If you want to get the most from special services for your child, it will require participation on your part but it is well worth it when you see the benefits from your child. From the smallest learning disability or behavior problem to the largest disability, your child will benefit when you take an active participation in helping.

Be Aware of the Law

It’s also important for parents to be aware of the laws that protect them and their children. No matter what type of special needs or circumstance your child has, you can feel confident in knowing that the law protects your child’s ability and right to an education. In fact, there are three laws that pertain to this.

To support their ability to learn in school, three Federal laws apply to children with special needs:

• The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) (1975)

• Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973

• The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) (1990).

Individual states may also have laws that protect your child’s right to an education. It is your duty to learn about these laws and how they apply to you.
